Hair Loss Glossary – Terms with Definition
Hirsutism: Abnormal growth of hair on a woman’s face and body.
Hormone: A substance produced by specialized cells in a living organism that’s transported in tissue fluids to regulate the action of specific cells or tissues.
Hypertrichosis: Abnormal growth of hair spreading on all the body parts.
Hypothyroid: Insufficient production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland.
It can result into various physical disorders, one of them being hair loss.
Infundibulum: A funnel-shaped proton, belonging to the hair follicle.
Intermediate Hairs: An intermediate hair belongs to a transitory manifestation between a terminal and a vellus hair. Pigmentation of intermediate hairs is variable, they may be normal to light in color.
Isthmus: The middle part of the hair follicle that connects the bulb and the infundibulum.

Keratin: Any of a group of fibrous proteins forming the main structural constituent of hair, nails, feathers, hoofs, claws, and horns.

Lanugo Hair: This is the hair that develops on the fetus. The hairs are fine and soft, and they grow all over the baby’s body. Some babies are born with these downy hairs, which are shed in the days that follow.
Male Pattern Baldness: The most commonly found hair loss syndrome in the male population, caused by genetic susceptibility, hormonal imbalance or age. Generally initiated in patches, this type of baldness affects the top most part of the scalp or the frontal area.
Medulla: A distinct inner region of hair that resides inside the cortex.
Melanin: A pigmenting agent that can be found inside the keratin fibers of the hair, determining hair color. Insufficient production of melanin causes gray hairs.
Melanocyte: It is the cell in which the pigmenting granule, melanin resides.
Menopause: The ceasing of menstruation or the period in a woman’s life (typically between 45 and 50) when this occurs.
Minoxidil: A general term used to describe a non prescription topical drug best known as the brand Rogaine. The drug is well known for its ability to prevent hair loss, apart from pacifying high blood pressure, for which it is originally meant.
Nonscarring Alopecia: A type of baldness in which, notwithstanding the loss of hair, there is no associated damage to the surrounind skin.
